Connecticut is poised to become the 17th state in the nation to repeal the death penalty after the initiative cleared the state senate on Thursday.

The proposal now heads to the state House of Representatives. Gov. Dannel P. Malloyhas has said he will sign the bill if it reaches his desk, reports the Hartford Courant.

The death penalty has been abolished in Alaska, Hawaii, New Mexico, North Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, West Virginia, New York, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, Maine, and Rhode Island.
