Calif. Hotel Barricade Suspect Found Dead

Officers had surrounded an Extended Stay motel beginning Wednesday morning, after officers tracked Peter James Thomas, 38, to the location. Thomas was found dead Thursday afternoon, when police entered a second-floor room of the hotel.

A northern California interstate reopened to morning commuters Thursday nearly a full day after SWAT officers from numerous agencies surrounded a motel where a stabbing suspect had barricaded himself.

The California Highway Patrol reopened Interstate 580 in San Rafael between Sir Francis Drake Boulevard and Highway 101 early Thursday. Officers had surrounded an Extended Stay motel beginning Wednesday morning, after officers tracked Peter James Thomas, 38, to the location.

The freeway was closed after the man fired a shot toward the freeway.

Thomas was found dead Thursday afternoon, when police entered a second-floor room of the hotel. His girlfriend, who he said was in the room with him, was found in a different room of the hotel.
