Recruit John Kohn, 40, was wearing protective headgear when he banged heads with another recruit as they were moving through doors in the training area.

A 40-year-old recruit who died as a result of an injury he suffered during training sustained his fatal injury during a defensive tactics drill, the Norfolk (Va.) Police Department has announced.

John Kohn was a local drummer, role-playing gamer, and aspiring police officer when he got hurt in the academy Dec. 9 and died nine days later, reports WTKR.

Kohn was wearing protective headgear when he banged heads with another recruit as they were moving through doors in the training area.

After the collision, Kohn became ill and was transported to the hospital by Norfolk Fire-Rescue. He died on Dec. 18. The state medical examiner is investigating the cause of death, which will be reviewed by Police Chief Bruce Marquis.

"The department will review the information that is made available from these investigations to determine any lessons to be learned," according to a statement by Marquis on the Norfolk Police Website.
