The widow of 40-year-old Norfolk (Va.) Police recruit John Kohn is not entitled to receive any death benefits, after her husband died during police training, reports WTKR.

The Virginia Line of Duty Act says benefits are available for families of "any individual whose death is the result of the performance of his duty" as a law enforcement officer.

It defines "line of duty" as any action the deceased was obligated or authorized to perform. Police recruits are not obligated nor authorized to perform any police duties, until they are sworn as officers.
