Los Angeles Police Officer Joe Buscaino collected the highest vote count in a special election to fill an open City Council seat, but must face the runner-up in a runoff election in January.

Officer Buscaino earned 29.1%, and Warren Furutani earned 22.3% in the Tuesday election. Because neither earned a plurality, the two will face off Jan. 17 to serve out the remainder of the term of Rep. Janice Hahn. The winner would be eligible to run for the seat in 2013, reports the Los Angeles Times.
