A Nassau County (N.Y.) Police officer was accidentally shot by an MTA officer who mistook him for a suspect during a barricade incident, reports the New York Daily News.

The incident began with a 911 call to Nassau County Police that a man was slashing cars in Massapequa Park with an 8-inch chef's knife. Officers confronted Anthony DiGeronimo, 21, near his home, and then he ran inside and barricaded himself in a rear bedroom.

When officers confronted him in the home, DiGeronimo lunged at them with the blade, forcing them to fatally shoot him. DiGeronimo was a satanist who had multiple knives in his hands and strapped to his body at the time of the shooting.

Nassau Officer Geoffrey Breitkopf responded as a special operations officer and entered the home with his weapon drawn. An MTA officer identified as Glenn Gentile then shot the officer in the face.

On Monday, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano postponed his annual state of the county address due to the shooting, reports the Long Island Press.
