As city leaders of Bell increased their own retirement benefits to record levels, they were also reducing pension benefits for new officers, including pushing back eligibility from 50 to 55 years old, the Los Angeles Times reports.

City Manager Robert Rizzo and other city officials approved major enhancements for their own retirement package in 2003. Three years later, the officials cut pension for new officers, claiming they could no longer afford them.

Officers feel "completely betrayed and shocked," Capt. Anthony Miranda tells the Times.
