A New York Supreme Court judge has ordered a public inquiry into the case of Eric Garner, who died while in police custody in 2014.

According to Fox News, Judge Joan Madden has ordered a “summary inquiry” into the case, setting a hearing for early October.

Garner died after an attempted arrest by NYPD officers. During the incident NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo used what has been called a "chokehold." Activists and protesters wanted the officers to be charged in the death. A grand jury declined to indict Pantaleo, but the department fired Pantaleo in 2019 following a disciplinary hearing and an extensive investigation.

Garner's shouted pleas of "I can't breathe" captured on cell-phone video then became a rallying cry for anti-police protesters.
