Officers with the New Rochelle (NY) Police Department are being lauded for their heroic rescue of residents trapped inside a building fully engulfed in flames.

According to CBS News, Officer Timothy Childs spotted the house ablaze on Saturday morning. He called it in to dispatch and then began evacuating the six-unit building.

Firefighters had not yet arrived at the scene so other responding police officers rushed into the building—without the type of protective equipment that firefighters wear in such circumstances—and searched for people in the building.

According to reports, at least one woman was located and pulled from the blaze.

The New Rochelle Police Benevolent Association said on Facebook, "Wishing a speedy recovery to three of our NR PBA members who were injured earlier today while helping rescue a woman from an active two-alarm building fire in downtown New Rochelle alongside New Rochelle Firefighters. Their quick response and selfless heroism is recognized and commended."
