An officer with the Twin Lakes (WI) Police Department will likely be separated from his K-9 partner after posting his two-week notice of departing the agency, and the village board determined that the dog would remain the "property" of the department.

According to Fox News, Twin Lakes Police Chief Adam Grosz said that he knew when Officer Joe Patla gave notice of his intention to leave the agency, the matter of the dog—K-9 Rex—might get complicated.

"They do spend 24 hours a day with the handler. The handler takes care of them. It does go to the handler's home," Grosz said.

Many residents have expressed their displeasure with the decision and want to keep Patla and Rex together, but the town's elected leaders and the department command staff continue to contend that the animal will remain with the agency.
