An officer with the Plano (TX) Police Department fatally shot a female subject who had stabbed him with an edged weapon as he attempted to assist her after a vehicle collision early Thursday morning, police say.

According to CBS News, a department spokesperson said that the officer—whose name has not been released—suffered stab wounds from an edged weapon as he attempted to assist the driver of a crashed vehicle.

The officer then retreated to create space between the knife-wielding woman and himself, but the suspect reportedly closed distance and the officer was forced to open fire in his defense.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of his wounds and later released.

The deceased female assailant has not yet been named.

The incident is being investigated by the police department and the Collin County District Attorney's Office.
