Kansas City Officer Stabbed During Wednesday Protest

The officer was waiting with Lewis for an ambulance to arrive when Lewis pulled a kitchen knife out of his pocket and stabbed the officer in the chest just above his vest, police say.

A Kansas City, MO, police officer was stabbed during a protest Wednesday afternoon. A suspect is in custody.

According to court records, the officer answered a medical call and when he arrived he saw the suspect Austin R. Lewis, 24, huffing or inhaling an unknown substance.

The officer was waiting with Lewis for an ambulance to arrive when Lewis pulled a kitchen knife out of his pocket and stabbed the officer in the chest just above his vest, police say.

The officer fell down and then pulled out his gun, which is when Lewis dropped the knife and began moving away, police say. The officer asked dispatchers for help and then pursued the suspect.

Eventually, Lewis reportedly laid down on his stomach with his hands behind his back the officer held him at gunpoint until backup arrived.

The officer was critically wounded but was reportedly stable in the hospital Wednesday night, KCTV reports.
