Officers with the Fullerton (CA) Police Department fatally shot a knife-wielding man on Wednesday night after he refused to comply with commands to drop the weapon, and instead stabbed a K-9 at the scene.

According to the Los Angeles Times, officers had responded to a domestic violence call and came upon a man reportedly holding a knife and threatening two teenage children who were fleeing the home.

The suspect—whose name has not yet been released—tried to reenter the house, which was believed to contain more family members, police say.

That prompted officers to deploy a K9 on the suspect, who then reportedly stabbed the dog.

Fullerton Police Department Spokesman said in a written statement, "Numerous commands to drop the knife were given, but the suspect refused to do so."

Officers opened fire, fatally wounding the suspect.

The K-9 was transported to a veterinary hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. He is expected to make a full recovery, the department reports on Facebook.
