A deputy with the Bonneville County Sheriff's Office was killed after being hit by another deputy's patrol vehicle as both were responding to a reported rollover crash early Monday morning.

According to East Idaho News, deputies were called in the early morning to investigate a rollover crash.

A deputy arrived and encountered a woman who was walking away from the scene holding a machete.

A Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office news release said that the first responding deputy followed the woman on foot and attempted to interact with her, but "she would not put down the machete and continued down the road on foot."

A second deputy arrived to assist and both reportedly continued to give commands to the woman while she held the machete.

A third deputy arrived at the scene and struck one of the pursuing the deputies subject.

The deputy who was struck—whose name has not yet been released—was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The woman with the machete was transported to a nearby hospital for mental health evaluation.
