According to CBS News, the incident occurred on Saturday when officers saw the suspect—wanted for two felonies—driving in a vehicle. Officers tried to initiate a traffic stop but he continued to drive away, leading to a brief vehicle pursuit, police report.

The suspect—whose name has not yet been released—reportedly lost control, crashed the car, and emerged with a firearm, immediately shooting at the officers.

While another officer began treating the injured officer, police said the suspect ran away on foot.

After a brief search of the area, they located the gunman in the backyard of a nearby home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of a gunshot wound to the hand.
