An off-duty officer with the Edinburgh (IN) Police Department accidentally shot a woman Wednesday evening while cleaning a handgun.

An off-duty officer with the Edinburgh (IN) Police Department accidentally shot a woman Wednesday evening while cleaning a handgun, according to police.

According to RTV-6 Indianapolis, police said a 33-year-old woman—whose name has not been released—suffered a gunshot wound to her leg and was transported to a nearby hospital where she is listed in stable condition.

The officer reportedly didn't realize there was a round in the chamber when he was cleaning his personal handgun.

The Johnson County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
