The officer with the Waseca Police Department who was shot in the head in early January continues to make tremendous strides in recovery, reportedly beginning to walk short distances and enjoying some of his favorite foods.

According to CBS News, Matson’s sister-in-law Nicole Matson said in an online journal that "his voice is getting stronger and he's able to speak more clearly at times."

She added, "They've upgraded his diet so he was able to enjoy some of his favorites like pizza and roast beef for meals."

Matson was shot in the upper right forehead by a suspect—identified as 37-year-old Tyler Janovsky—who has subsequently been charged with three counts of first-degree attempted murder.

Janovsky also was shot but was released from the hospital and is being held in the Oak Park Heights prison, the highest custody level in the state’s correctional system.
