2 Maryland Officers Shot, Person of Interest in Custody

Two detectives with the Anne Arundel County Police Department were shot late Wednesday night while in pursuit of a person connected with a death investigation.

Two detectives with the Anne Arundel County (MD) Police Department were shot late Wednesday night while in pursuit of a person connected with a death investigation.

A person of interest has been arrested in connection with the shooting. According to officials, with the arrest of the person of interest, police do not believe there is any further threat to the community.

According to NBC News, police said the detectives—Scott Ballard, a 22-year veteran assigned to the fugitive apprehension team, and Ian Preece, a 13-year veteran assigned to the homeland security investigations team—had spotted a vehicle missing from the home of a man who had been found dead of a gunshot wound and they attempted to initiate a traffic stop. The driver of the vehicle opened fire and a gunfight ensued.

Both detectives were transported to a nearby hospital where one is listed in critical, but stable, condition after being taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition. The other is said to be in stable condition and recovering.
