An officer with the Chicago Police Department was struck by a vehicle as a motorist reportedly attempted to flee a traffic stop in the very early hours of Thursday morning.

According to NBC News, Chicago police said officers had attempted to conduct the traffic stop shortly after midnight when the driver suddenly drove off, hitting one officer in the leg.

That officer—whose name has not been released—was transported to a nearby hospital where he was said to be in good condition.

According to WLS, the fleeing vehicle got about three miles northbound before crashing into a squad car in the 7600-block of South Lowe Avenue, police said.

Two individuals attempted to flee the scene on foot but were quickly apprehended, police said. One of those individuals—identified as 27-year-old Lamonte Powell—now faces a felony charge of battery to a police officer and misdemeanor counts of driving on a suspending license, as well as fleeing and eluding.
