An Oxnard, CA, police officer was killed Wednesday in a motorcycle accident while he was driving home after work.

Officer Nathan Martin, 45, was off-duty when he died following a crash near the intersection of Third Street between Marquita Street and Campton Drive, south of Oxnard’s La Colonia neighborhood around 4:00 p.m., the Oxnard Police Department told KTLA.

Martin had just left the Oxnard police station less than a mile away and was driving eastbound on Third Street when a tractor trailer turned left in front of him, Chief Scott Whitney said during a press conference Wednesday. Martin was transported to a local hospital and all life saving measures were attempted, Whitney said, but he succumbed to his injuries.

“It’s a terrible and dark day for everyone here at the city of Oxnard and the Oxnard Police Department,” Whitney said. “He was a good man. He worked hard for his city. He was committed to his job.”
