An officer with the Clovis (NM) Police Department came under fire as he attempted to follow a vehicle matching the description of one that had been reported stolen on Friday afternoon.

The agency posted on Facebook that upon seeing the possible stolen vehicle "the officer turned to follow the suspect vehicle in an effort to run the vehicle’s license plate. The suspect vehicle drove through a stop signed intersection without stopping, and immediately after this the officer heard multiple gunshots he believed were being discharged from the suspect vehicle. Officers began a pursuit of the vehicle based on its continuing danger to the public."

During the pursuit, officers heard more gunfire from the suspect’s vehicle. Debris and glass from the sports utility vehicle struck the marked patrol unit, a result of the gunfire during the vehicle chase.

The pursuit ended shortly thereafter as two suspects fled on foot, police said.

One of the occupants—identified as Jeremy Banning—has been arrested for aggravated assault on a police officer, aggravated fleeing a law enforcement officer, shooting at or from a motor vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, and resisting, evading or obstructing an officer.
