An officer with the Colorado Springs Police Department who was struck by gunfire during a traffic stop over the weekend has been released from the hospital even as the search for the man who shot him continues.

According to CBS News, the officer called for backup and waited to approach the car until that backup arrived. As the two officers neared the vehicle, the driver—identified as 35-year-old Randy Bishop—opened fire, striking Officer Beau Becker, a four-year veteran of the department.

The suspect fled the scene in his vehicle but soon crashed, and then fled on foot.

Bishop had previously attacked a police officer in November as he escaped custody at a hospital, seized the officer's gun, and fled in a stolen BMW.

The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is conducting the ongoing investigation.
