After debating the move since late last year and putting the matter to a vote, the Village of Deposit (NY) has decided to dissolve its police department.

According to WSKG Radio, the Village—which lies about 30 miles east of Binghamton and straddles the West Branch Delaware River and is comprised of land from both Broome County and Delaware County—faced substantial tax increases in order to continue to maintain the department.

Broome County residents faced a 24% tax increase, while Delaware County residents faced a 16-17% increase.

The agency will disband the department on March 1. Following that, the sheriff's departments from those two counties will patrol and provide police services to the area.
