An officer with the Navajo (NM) Police Department has succumbed to a medical event he suffered on duty in early October.

"It is with great sorrow and significant grief that the Navajo Police Department announces the passing of Police Sergeant Lamar Martin," Phillip Francisco, Chief of Police Navajo Police Department, said on Facebook. "The Navajo Police family extends our thoughts and prayers to his family, friends and loved ones."

Sergeant Martin was an honored and awarded military veteran serving in the United States Marine Corps and in the New Mexico Army National Guard. He was assigned for active duty in support of Iraqi Freedom in 2004 and 2009. For the Navajo Police Department, Martin was a Defensive Tactics Instructor, a General Instructor and a Field Training Officer, a member of the Strategic Reaction Team and was a consummate professional conducting his duties in the service citizens of Navajo.

The social media post concluded, "During the time of mourning, our police family wants Sergeant Martin's family to know that we are with you and stand ready to assist in any way. We ask for your prayers and support as we navigate this difficult time."
