Fourteen police officers were killed in an ambush attack in the state of Michoacán, where drug cartels have for years been engaged in violent battle with each other and with Mexican police.

According to the BBC, the attack bore the hallmarks of the hyper-violent New Generation Jalisco Cartel, which has emerged in recent years as one of Mexico’s dominant organized crime groups.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador has been trying to reduce drug crime since he took office last December, but may end the year with Mexico suffering a record number of killings.

According to reports, a convoy of police vehicles came under attack by heavily armed gunmen in pick-up trucks.
