An off-duty officer with the Alhambra (CA) Police Department suffered an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound during an encounter with an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy on Sunday night.

Neither individual knew that the other was in law enforcement as they exchanged gestures from the driver's seats of the vehicles they were driving.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the deputy pulled alongside the officer and motioned toward him to slow down and stop driving erratically.

The officer reportedly thought that the other driver was being aggressive and thought that the exchange between the two might escalate to violence so he drew his gun and in so doing he fired a shot.

Alhambra police said the officer was hospitalized in stable condition.
