A barricaded gunman who opened fire on police was shot and killed early Wednesday at an apartment complex housing elderly individuals. It is currently unclear whether the man, a resident there, was shot by police or died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"Our goal in a situation like this is the safety of everyone involved," said Ferndale Police Chief Vincent Palazzolo. "We had tactical, investigative, detective and SWAT officers at the scene, a really skilled team, and we worked hard for a peaceful resolution."
According to the Detroit Free Press, the man—whose identity has not yet been released—may have been under the influence of narcotics.
