An off-duty reserve officer with the Tampa Police Department was in pursuit of a suspected hit-and-run driver when shots were fired late Wednesday morning.
According to WTSP-TV, Officer Robert Potts observed a man who left the scene of a hit-and-run collision and attempted to effect a pursuit.
The suspect—33-year-old Christopher Jones—exited his vehicle and a struggle ensued.
During the confrontation, the officer's service weapon was discharged, striking the officer in the shoulder.
The officer was airlifted to a nearby hospital where his wounds were listed as non-life-threatening.
