An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department is being treated for typhoid fever, also called salmonella typhi, a bacterial disease that can spread through contaminated food or beverage.

According to the KABC-TV, a second employee has salmonella typhi-like symptoms.

The department is now working with other city services departments to disinfect the workplace—the Central Division—where both employees are based.

The Los Angeles Police Protective League released a statement saying, "Officers worry enough about being shot or injured policing the streets of Los Angeles, they shouldn't also have to worry about being infected with diseases they can take home to their families simply by showing up to work. Our demand is simple; clean it up and provide preventive measures before there is a massive outbreak."
