Charleston Coroner: Visiting CA Officer's Death Caused by Drugs

An officer with the West Sacramento (CA) Police Department found dead in a Charleston, SC, hotel room in December died of an apparent overdose involving fentanyl and heroin.

An officer with the West Sacramento (CA) Police Department found dead in a Charleston (SC) hotel room in December died of an apparent overdose involving fentanyl and heroin.

According to WCSC-TV, deputy coroner Sara Tuuk determined that Officer Rinaldo Monterrosa died from an acute mixed drug toxicity which included fentanyl, heroin/morphine, and ethanol.

Monterrosa had reportedly been attending training in the region, then traveled to Charleston to be with friends for a military graduation.

Monterrosa was an 11-year veteran of the department and a U.S. Army veteran as well.

He is survived by a wife and four children.
