A woman in a wheelchair who was struck by a hit-and-run driver has been gifted a new wheelchair by the police officers who responded to the scene of the incident.

According to WGN-TV, Jean Baikauskas was taking her wheelchair across the street when a car ran a red light and struck her.

The woman's wheelchair was destroyed in the incident, and her recovery from an earlier injury was extended to include her new injuries.

Officers with the Hammond Police Department—along with FOP Lodge 51—learned that the woman was forced to use a walker during her recovery and decided to take action and purchase a new wheelchair for her.

FOP Lodge 51 President said, "It really tugged on our heart strings that one of our residents needed help and endured so much pain. We jumped on board right away and that’s what community is about."
