New Hampshire Chief: Budget is 'Treading Water'

The outgoing chief of the Nashua (NH) Police Department reportedly said that the budgetary constraints his agency has been saddled with is just enough to "get by."

According to the Union-Leader, Chief Andrew Lavoie is urging the Board of Aldermen to consider raising Mayor Jim Donchess' proposed budget for the Nashua Police Department, citing extensive overtime costs and other factors. The department is spending an average of $30,000 a week in overtime.

Deputy Chief Mike Carignan, who will replace Lavoie as chief when he retires later this year, said the department has struggled to hire a full force because it is genuinely worried there won’t be enough money to fund everything.
