A motor officer with the Thomasville (AL) Police Department was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile and rushed into surgery after he was involved in a traffic accident on Wednesday night.

The department said in a statement on Facebook that Corporal Michael Lofton was on patrol on a local highway when another vehicle crossed his path.

Lofton was assessed on the scene and transported to a nearby hospital, where he was then taken by Life Flight helicopter to a hospital in Mobile.

"He is currently in stable condition and awaiting further surgeries," the agency said. "The Thomasville Police Department would like to thank you everyone for their support and prayers."

Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall—the state’s chief law-enforcement officer—said on Twitter, "Sending prayers for Thomasville Police Department Corporal Michael Lofton who was seriously injured on duty last night when his motorcycle was struck by a vehicle. Cpl. Lofton was airlifted to USA Medical Center in Mobile and underwent surgery. Praying for his full recovery!"
