On Thursday, Ronald Hamilton—who was convicted of capital murder in the killings of his wife and rookie Officer Ashley Guindon—learned that he has been sentenced to seven consecutive life terms in prison.

The 34-year-old Army staff sergeant had initially been facing a death penalty, but that was blocked by a Virginia jury last year when it deadlocked on one of the charges against him, according to WTOP.

Officer Guindon was working her first shift with the Prince William County Police Department after being sworn in. Guindon had previously served in the Marine Corps from 2007-2015.

During the sentencing hearing, Guindon's mother called Hamilton a "vicious, cold-blooded, heartless killer."
