An officer with the Ellenville (NY) Police Department reportedly shot himself in his chest—the bullet was stopped by his body armor—as he attempted to flee from an attack by a rabid fox.

According to the New York Post, 24-year-old Harold Nunuvero was struck while responding to a report about the fox running amuck in the town.

The Post reported that the officer was being pursued by the infected animal in the village Tuesday, when he tried to climb a chain link fence to escape.

But his foot got caught in the fence and he flipped over onto his back.

Although the officer's service weapon discharged, his body armor prevented serious injury.

Officer Nunuvero was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was treated and released.
