Officers with the New York Police Department—by far the nation's largest metropolitan police agency—have been told that they may be targets of one of the nation's most notorious gangs, particularly while off duty.

According to CBS News, the department issued a memo indicating that MS-13 gang members may be plotting to attack officers in their homes. The gang is specifically targeting officers who live on Long Island, according to the memo.

The memo read, in part, "Members of MS-13 are looking to 'hit' NYPD police officers, specifically in the Brentwood/Central Islip area as well as possibly Patchogue."

Law enforcement officers living in those areas were advised to be aware of anything out of the ordinary and to do what they can to change their daily habits.
