A K-9 with the Fairfax County (VA) Police Department died suddenly on Friday, according to WUSA-TV.

Chief Edwin C. Roessler Jr. said K-9 "Doby" collapsed and stopped breathing while responding to a report of an armed robbery in Alexandria.

"We're devastated to share the news of the passing of K-9 Doby of our Special Operations Division," the department said on Facebook. "Despite heroic attempts to render aid and rush him to an emergency vet, he sadly passed away."

Doby's handler reportedly administered CPR and the K-9 was then transported to a nearby veterinary clinic where he was subsequently pronounced dead.

Doby was born in Hungary and had just turned two years old, police say. He had been a member of the FCPD since March 2018.

"We wish K-9 Doby's family strength in this difficult time," the Facebook post concluded.
