Illinois Deputy Killed in Traffic Collision en Route to Work

A deputy with the Cook County Sheriff's Office was killed in a head-on collision while he was on his way to work on Tuesday.

The department said on Facebook, "Tragically, 39-year-old Sheriff’s Deputy Nick Theofanopoulos was killed yesterday evening in a traffic crash while his way to work. He proudly served our office and county for over 15 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and our staff at this exceptionally difficult time."

Theofanopoulos was en route to a work assignment at a hospital, where he was expected to guard an inmate, according to WGN-TV.

The 21-year-old driver who caused the fatal crash was transported to a nearby hospital where her condition stabilized.
