Family of Man Accused of Killing Utah Officer "Deeply Saddened"

The family of a man suspected of killing a 29-year-old officer with the Provo (UT) Police Department said in a statement that they are "deeply saddened" by the gunman's actions.

The family of a man suspected of killing a 29-year-old officer with the Provo (UT) Police Department said in a statement that they are "deeply saddened" by the gunman's actions, according to Fox News.

Master Police Officer Joseph Shinners was attempting to apprehend a wanted fugitive—identified as Matt Hoover—when the subject opened fire, fatally wounding Shinners.  

"We, as extended family of Matt Hoover, are deeply saddened for his actions that took Officer Joe Shinners' life. Our thoughts, prayers and condolences are with his family. We strongly stand behind and extend our support to law enforcement and to the community who lost a brother, friend and all around hero,"

Officer Shinners had served with the Provo Police Department for three years. He is survived by his wife and small child.
