A K-9 with the Orange County (CA) Sheriff's Office died suddenly on Saturday, according to a post on the agency's Facebook page.

K-9 Arco was recently diagnosed with a congenital heart condition, which was suspected to be the cause of his death, according to the Orange County Register.

The agency said, "Last night the world suddenly lost a hero, a protector and a friend. Arco served the Orange County Sheriff's Department for three years. He was a dual purpose K-9 trained in patrol and narcotics."

K-9 Arco reportedly assisted with locating over a half a million dollars of currency, 250 pounds of marijuana, 350 pounds of methamphetamine, 70 pounds of heroin and helped to take numerous drug dealers off the street. Arco had more than 70 suspect surrenders and five apprehensions.

K-9 Arco worked in all areas of Orange County and deployed with SWAT, air support, and harbor patrol.

"Arco performed in countless public demonstrations in front of thousands of fans. Arco was more than a police dog he was truly man's best friend," the Facebook post concluded.
