South Carolina Man Shot, Killed Following Standoff with Police

Deputies with the Union County (SC) Sheriff's Office came under fire while responding to a call of a man with a gun. The man had reportedly discharged his firearm a number of times before returning to his home.

Deputies with the Union County (SC) Sheriff's Office came under fire while responding to a call of a man with a gun. The man had reportedly discharged his firearm a number of times before returning to his home.

Deputies tried to talk to the man—identified as 81-year-old Harold Thompson—who remained barricaded in the home. Deputies summoned their special response team, who then tried to negotiate the gunman's surrender, according to WBTW-TV.

The man then reportedly emerged from the rear of the home opening fire on deputies, who then returned fire, fatally striking the man.

No deputies were hurt in the incident.
