Command staff with the Cambridge Police Department in Massachusetts took to the streets on Monday to cover for their officers who had served in the military—those veterans were given the day off for the holiday.

Cambridge Police Commissioner Branville Bard went out on patrol in the stead of Officer Omar Corona, who served in the U.S. Army, according to WFXT-TV News.

"Many of our service men and women and their families suffered extended periods apart and today gives them a day when they don't have to be apart. Where they can spend that time together," Commissioner Bard said.

A total of six military veterans were granted the extra time off.
