Officers with the Laredo (TX) Police Department responded to calls of a man wielding an ax in a threatening manner, arriving at the scene to find a man fitting that description.
Police said that 60-year-old Eric John Hale refused to comply with officers' commands.
A hostage negotiating team was then called in to help deescalate the situation, according to LMTonline.com.
Following two unsuccessful attempts to end the threat by deploying TASERs, three officers were forced to fire their guns, striking the individual at least twice, LPD said.
Hale was transported to a nearby hospital, where he is listed in stable condition.
