A grand jury in New Jersey has ruled that Sergeant Kevin Clements was justified in fatally shooting LaShanda Anderson in June.

Anderson had reportedly stolen more than $3,000 in merchandise from a Marshall's store when responding officers attempted to detain her.

Clements was standing between 12 and 25 feet in front of the suspect's vehicle as the SUV accelerated toward him. He fired three shots, striking Anderson twice—once in the head and once in the elbow.

The vehicle continued rolling after Anderson was struck, eventually going down an embankment where the SUV came to an abrupt stop.

An analysis of airbag data indicated the vehicle was traveling at 19 to 22 miles per hour for the five seconds before the airbag deployed, according to NJ.com.
