Officer Injured, K-9 Killed in Collision During Pursuit

A police officer with the Riverhead (NY) Police Department was injured and a K9 died in an incident that started at a DWI checkpoint on Sunday morning.

A police officer with the Riverhead (NY) Police Department was injured and a K9 died in an incident that started at a DWI checkpoint on Sunday morning, according to RiverheadLocal.com.

Officers pursued a vehicle that refused to stop at the checkpoint. The chase resulted in a collision that claimed the life of K-9 “Rocky” and injured the handler driving the vehicle, Riverhead Town Police said in a press release.

The K-9 was ejected from the vehicle in the collision, police said. The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of injuries police described as not life-threatening.

Other police units continued the pursuit but the chase was terminated.

Police continue to search for the dark-colored Audi operated by a unknown black male, police said.
