Police responded at approximately 0045 hours on Sunday to reports of shots fired. Officers then discovered Trooper Kenneth Smith and Rickie Vick both suffering from gunshot wounds.

An off-duty Mississippi State Trooper was shot and killed early Sunday morning, according to WREG-TV.

Police responded at approximately 0045 hours on Sunday to reports of shots fired. Officers then discovered Trooper Kenneth Smith and Rickie Vick both suffering from gunshot wounds.

Vick was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Trooper Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

A suspect—identified as 43-year-old Troy Anthony Eaton—reportedly surrendered to law enforcement authorities at approximately 0530 hours on Sunday.
