A 24-year-old Metro Nashville PD officer was shot twice during a fatal officer-involved shooting Friday. He continued to recover in the hospital on Monday morning, authorities said.

Officer Samuel Galluzzi, who suffered gunshots to his thigh and ankle during a fatal exchange of gunfire with a shooting suspect, underwent surgery Saturday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, reports the Tennessean.

Police on Monday said Galluzzi, a two-year veteran with the police department, was injured about 10:30 p.m. Friday night near the city's Bordeaux neighborhood.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Sershawn Martez Dillon, 31, of Nashville, died in the shooting.

Dillon is believed to be the same individual responsible for a stranger sexual assault that occurred in the same neighborhood just prior to his encounter with law enforcement, the TBI reported.

Metro police said two other officers, Detective Zachary Ronan and Officer John Petriello, "returned the gunman's fire." They were not injured.

As of Monday morning, TBI had not yet released what led up to the shooting.
