Members of the Hawaii County Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) discovered Justin Waiki hiding under a blanket in the back of an SUV at a checkpoint. The suspected cop killer opened fire, wounding an officer. Officers returned fire, killing Waiki.

The wounded officer has been identified as Sergeant Bryan Tina — he is reportedly in stable condition.

Three individuals who police say were helping Waiki were arrested for hindering prosecution in the first degree, according to KHON-TV.
