2 TN Officers Wounded, Suspect Killed in Gunfight

Two Kingsport, TN, police officers were wounded and a suspect killed in a Thursday afternoon standoff and gunfight.

Kingsport police responded to the home around 2:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a man threatening to harm himself and one of his neighbors.

Officers found out the suspect, identified as Hugh Kyle Hurd, was wanted on an outstanding warrant for failure to appear on a previous charge of aggravated stalking involving a different neighbor.

Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect had barricaded himself inside the residence and was in possession of a firearm. A perimeter was set up by officers and KPD SWAT Team was called in to assist.

Around 4:45 p.m., police said the Hurd came out of his condominium, armed with a firearm and there was an “immediate exchange of gunfire between him and the officers. He then retreated back inside his condominium.”

Police said the shots from Hurd struck two Kingsport police officers.

Around 6:00 p.m., the SWAT team entered the home and found the suspect dead, according to the KPD.

The wounded officers were taken to the hospital for treatment. One of the officers was treated and released, while the other officer remains hospitalized. The names of the officers have not been revealed at this time, WJHL TV reports.
