An Iowa reserve deputy who was walking on Interstate 70 in the Kansas City suburb of Blue Springs, MO, was struck by three vehicles and killed Saturday night, the Missouri State Highway Patrol said.

Jeffrey M. Koontz, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene, the patrol said. He was a reserve deputy for the Pottawattamie County (IA) Sheriff's Office, reports the Omaha World-Herald.

It was unclear why Koontz was walking in the roadway.
